Gamer Girls and PSTEM Fields

Girls who play video games are three times more likely to choose physical science, technology, engineering or maths (PSTEM) degrees compared to their non-gaming counterparts, according to new research from the University of Surrey.

There are many interesting Article out there about Girls who Game. One that I stumbled across recently talked about the fact that Girls who play video games are more likely to go into PSTEM (physical science, technology, engineering, or maths) fields.

As with Gaming, these are fields that are typically male-dominated. The study found that Girls from the age of 13 to 14 that were considered “heavy gamers” were three times more likely to go into these fields. The same was not shown for their male counterparts. Even further 100 percent of the women that participated in this study and were already in PSTEM degrees were identified as gamers.

This does not mean that every girl that games will go into a PSTEM field obviously but the chances increase. This study suggested identifying these girls early on in order to encourage and mentor them as they explore career possibilities towards PSTEM fields.
