The Stigma

For some reason when Men think of Women gaming they see the first picture. Now granted there are girls out there that perpetuate the stigma against Women who game but the vast majority of us are not that Woman. It’s okay to be girly and a gamer but as Women, we want to be recognized as legitimate gamers, not just girls who play to impress a guy or to meet a guy. Because let’s be honest… it’s not about the Men, it’s about the love of the Game.

Pretending to be someone you are Not

Because this Stigma exists many Women who play games feel like they need to hide who they are. Interestingly enough I have also met Men who pretend to be Women when in Game because they believe they will be treated differently. Within the gaming communities, I have seen this firsthand. I have seen Men who do the same job as I do get treated with more respect. I have at times stated I am going to “quit” only to come back under a Pen Name and act like I am a man just to see how much more I am respected.

Hiding who we are

However, we feel we need to hide who we are as Women because if not we are inundated with flirty messages and unwanted pictures (you ladies know what I am talking about). We want to be left alone to play our game but instead, we end up fighting for the respect we deserve as Women in the Game. Because of this…

When They Lose Their Minds

Hello, chill out boys! We can be Girls/Women who play games. We are not here for you to gawk at or to hook up with you. We are here because we love the game as well. We are here and we are just as good as our male counterparts. So while we may be the only female around please don’t treat us differently.

It’s okay to be a Girl and a Gamer

Women need to know that it is okay to be a Gamer and a Girl. It is okay to expect the same respect men get in the Gaming Industry and it is okay to expect to be able to play a game without unwanted advances. As Women, we need to be able to step up and say I’m here and this is who I am. I am a Gamer Girl and proud of it. Because you better believe that while I am getting my hair done or a pedicure I may just be beating you in my chosen game at the same time.
