Feminist… that’s a word that seems antique. It’s 2019 (almost 2020) do we still really need Feminists? To understand the need for feminists in today’s society we must first understand what a feminist is. I love definitions and google so of course I googled Define: Feminist.

Okay… so that really wasn’t helpful. Then I noticed below the two questions that people ask, so I kept on scrolling and hit the drop down boxes.

That of course helps. A feminist is someone that supports equality of both sexes, specifically in the arena of political, economic, and social equality. I never defined myself as a feminist but reading that definition, I do now. I define not only myself as a feminist but this site as feminist. This site in and of itself advocates for social equality for female gamers.
The word feminist always felt beyond my touch, you see how media portrays feminists and you want nothing to do with looking like that. So often feminists are portrayed as the ugly duckling, the nerd, the social outcast, the misfit, the man hater. Feminists generally are not portrayed well in social media and that makes sense if you understand this:

As women we have the ability to be who we want. We can be a feminist and still dress sexy. We can be a feminist and not conform to the societal definition of a feminist.

Being a feminist means one thing, that you believe in equality of women. So YES I AM A FEMINIST. I am an Angry Feminist and I am proud of it. I am angry that we still have to have this debate. I am angry that women are considered and treated as less because they are women. I am angry that society gives different standards based off gender.
I am angry that because I am a girl that games I get less respect. I am angry that men assume I am there to game because I want to meet a guy or flirt. I am angry at how women are portrayed in games, or not included in games at all. I am that women who game are not taken as seriously. I am angry that because we are women, because of something we can’t control we have to fight for equality. I am angry that we live in a society that is close minded… but I am going to keep writing and talking and bringing up these issues. Because we are not less than, we are just as talented as our male counterparts and we deserve the same respect. We deserve equality.

What an Interesting post! So refreshing to read! I was wondering if you could checkout my new piece on living in a hierarchical patriarchal structure where slut shaming still exists. And I would really appreciate it if you could comment some feedback to improve the writing style. Looking forward to hearing from you. – Kiran
