An Evolving Culture

The World is a scary place. Technically I am defined as a Millenial but I am at the older end of the spectrum. So I still remember things like the ice cream truck and babysitting at a young age and latchkey kids. I remember things that would typically define a different generation. Maybe it is because I am an older Millenial and technology was starting to really take off as I grew up or maybe it was the way I was raised.

I guess it’s not important. However, there are other things I remember from growing. I remember being taught to care for people and to practice compassion. I remember learning that we all can hit bad times and sometimes we are just dealt crappy hands.

Technology is amazing. It has allowed us to make some amazing advances. However, what I hate about technology and social media is the Anonymity it has given us as a culture. We can hide behind a screen and hurl vicious words without having to see the damage we are doing. We can make snap judgments based off what the media tells us and blame people for their situation because we do not have to see it and we do not have to think about it.

Social Media and Technology to some degree have destroyed our culture. It has allowed us to distance ourselves from real hurt, pain, and from recognizing that the people on the other side of the screen are just that, people. That they have lives and they have hurts. We hear the word snowflake hurled around when we conscientiously object to the way people are addressing a situation. We are told it is acceptable because it is a joke or we are asked if it is our first day on the internet.

From behind the screen we are afforded enough distance to not see how our words are impacting the world. And as time goes on we are systematically being desensitized to the plight of others. Yes, I understand that some of this desensitization can fall on the shoulders of con artists who have also taken advantage of the internet. However, we are becoming desensitized to it all.

The saddest thing is that when someone dares to show their heart they are labeled as Naive or a Snowflake and put down. Slowly this “internet attitude” is creeping into the rest of the world. This scares me and I want to know how to change it before it is too late. Because right now, I’m scared for our future as a culture.
